1919 Peruvian general strike

In January 1919, Peru's anarcho-syndicalist movement organized a general strike for an eight-hour workday, which went on for three days while people clashed in the streets and some strike leaders were arrested and tortured. Many workers and students in the Lima-Callao region joined. On 15 January, President Pardo agreed to the strikers' demand. Steven Hirsch notes, "The conquest of the eight hour day constituted a milestone in the development of the anarcho-syndicalist labour movement."[1]
